Flying high for our good sports

OneAmerica Tower may be the second-tallest building in Indiana, but from a flagpole-height perspective, it’s second to none. On an 80-foot-tall pole above the roof of 533-foot OneAmerica Tower, the 15-foot-by-25-foot U.S. flag waves majestically.

But did you know the origin of the flags that fly about 20 feet underneath the U.S. flag?

OneAmerica flies the flags of five local pro sports teams — the Indianapolis Colts, Indiana Pacers, Indiana Fever, Indianapolis Indians, and Indy Eleven (shown in picture) — when they play a home game. Only one sports flag is flown at a time. Other flags associated with other sporting events occasionally fly as well.

It’s our company’s way of supporting community events that have a significant impact on our city, as well as the spirit of the people of Indianapolis and Central Indiana.

“The Pacers and Fever truly appreciate OneAmerica’s sky-high support and elevated reminder that when the flags are flying, our teams are in action trying to do the same,” said Bill Benner, Senior Vice President of Corporate, Community and Public Relations, Pacers Sports & Entertainment (PS&E).

The flag is taken down after midnight following its fly date. The American Flag is raised at all times with the exception of severe weather or high winds in excess of 20 mph, which can stress the nylon fabric.

“Flag-flying is truly a goodwill gesture,” said David Lies, vice president of real estate for OneAmerica. No fees are charged to be on the flagpole. The OneAmerica Tower building manager, Cushman Wakefield, handles details of all flag matters and the participating sports teams are responsible for providing flags.
