OneAmerica Sets Volunteerism Record as Week of Caring Reaches 5-Year Milestone

An all-time high of 850 OneAmerica^® associates in three states contributed a combined 2,500 hours of volunteer work during the company’s fifth Week of Caring, a community-enriching tradition that benefitted more than a dozen United Way agencies and nonprofits while shining a positive light on first responders in a unique way.

Associates in Indianapolis, the Milwaukee and Appleton areas in Wisconsin, and San Diego spent time doing a variety of hands-on assignments ranging from landscaping, packaging food kits for children, cleaning, organizing, sorting donations, mapping unmarked areas prone to disasters, and assisting with construction. Those who were unable to go off-site Sept. 10-14 wrote thank you letters to those in public safety on the 17th anniversary date of the 9/11 tragedy.

"I am proud of our associates, who stepped up in a record-setting way," said Scott Davison, chairman, president and CEO of OneAmerica, who volunteered at Outreach, an Indianapolis organization that assists homeless teenagers. "The need in our communities is great, and so was our response."

When Week of Caring launched in 2014, OneAmerica became the first organization in central Indiana to devote an entire week to volunteer activities. Employee participation has increased each year, tackling critical projects so that staffs of social-service agencies can focus on their core missions. Week of Caring also provides volunteers the opportunity to become more familiar with community organizations that have sparked their interest.

"Our associates get to see first-hand the people and programs their contributions support," said Jen Pittman, assistant vice president for community affairs. "These communities are our home and we feel a responsibility to help make it a better place to live for all."
