Understanding Participants' Retirement Planning Behaviors and Attitudes

November 16, 2016 Research

We recently completed an online survey of more than 10,000 retirement plan participants. The survey results give us insights into participant behaviors and attitudes about retirement planning and financial wellness.

We asked participants to share information about how frequently they think about retirement. Interestingly, participants think about retirement at a relatively high frequency. Nearly one-third of respondents (32 percent) think about retirement as often as weekly. Men tend to think about retirement more frequently than women; 69 percent of men think about retirement monthly, compared to only 55 percent of women.

Based on the survey results, frequency of retirement though increases with age. Twenty-three percent of participants younger than 35 think about retirement on a weekly basis, compared to 27 percent of participants 35-49 and 45 percent of participants aged 50 and older.
