Employers Use a Variety of Communication Methods

November 21, 2016 Research

In a recent survey, we asked plan sponsors how they communicate with their employees. The most popular means of communicating with employees is an email newsletter; 43 percent of plan sponsors have one. Mail (24 percent), meetings (18 percent) and intranet sites (14 percent) are also relatively popular, but a wide range of tactics are used. When developing your communication strategy, it's important to consider different delivery methods. People prefer to receive information in different ways, so using a myriad of communication vehicles will help increase the number of employees who receive the message.

We also asked plan sponsors how frequently they communicate with their employees. According to our survey results, 44 percent of plan sponsors communicate with their employees about their retirement plan on a quarterly basis. Quarterly communications are effective because they are consistent without becoming too frequent.
